Describe Yourself:
University of St. Andrews graduate, Blair Hornstine, knows the value of one's own physical health. As she entered high school in 1998, she was diagnosed with a disease that confined her to her home. She was no longer able to perform basic tasks, including going to school on a daily basis. It was decided by her family and school administrators that she would complete her high school degree at home, aided by a team of Special Education professionals. The adversity her disease created for her did not deter her in succeeding. In fact, in 2003, Ms. Hornstine was declared her high school's official valedictorian. She was awarded her high school diploma with the highest honors possible.
This drive for academic excellence is what led Blair Hornstine to her acceptance at the University of St. Andrews in Scotland. There, surrounded by the ocean and beauty of the cliffs, she earned her Master's Degree in Classical Studies with distinction. She was also selected to be St. Andrews' student representative at the British School at Athens over two semesters. Ms. Hornstine continued her pattern of scholastic achievement by attending Juilliard School from 2006 to 2007. There Hornstine studied two of her strongest passions: music and singing.
In addition to a fierce dedication to academia, Ms. Hornstine is also an advocate for those less fortunate than herself. In fact, in 1994 she began and organization called MAGIC (Moorestown Alliance for Goodwill and Interest in the Community) with her brother, Adam. MAGIC's goal was to support and supply elderly, young, and underprivileged women everywhere. Her organization has contributed countless amounts of time to worthy causes, such as beautifying and restoring local parks in order to promote healthy after school activity and discourage violence in the community.
Blair Hornstine: The Importance of Family
For Blair Hornstine, family has always been a driving force. The daughter of a Superior Court Judge, Ms. Hornstine has consistently maintained, throughout her childhood and young adulthood, a fervent respect for Law and Justice. When Blair Hornstine felt that she was being discriminated against by not being named sole valedictorian of her high school, she fought for her rights as a special needs student. The recipient of a Master of Arts degree in Classical Studies, Ms. Blair Hornstine is currently pursuing a career in public interest law.
Blair Hornstine’s mother is a stay-at-home mom who proved herself heavily active in her community. As a child, Blair learned a great deal about the value of service from the leadership and example of her mother, and she has followed in her mother’s footsteps in her own community involvement. The President and Co-founder of the Moorestown Alliance for Goodwill and Interest in Community (MAGIC), Blair Hornstine was a community leader beginning at a very young age in her hometown of Moorestown, New Jersey.
Blair Hornstine’s brother has also served as a great inspiration to her. A titan of academia himself, he graduated as Moorestown High’s Valedictorian in 1999, just four years before Blair Hornstine would receive the same honor despite her considerable health impairment.
